There are two pipes that run from the cylinder heads into the air box. These pipes carry oil and water vapour that is produced during the normal running of the motor and they are routed through the air box to comply with various emissions regulations around the world (California notably). These vapours are non combustible and reduce the amount of combustible charge that is passed through the motor on each stroke. Re-routing them away from the air box smoothes the running of the motor and reduces clogging in the air filter. DO NOT CARRY OUT THIS MODIFICATION UNLESS YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE DOING. PRESSURE CAN BE BUILT UP IN THE MOTOR CAUSING MAJOR DAMAGE TO SEALS!! SEEK OUT A PROFESSIONAL.
